Summary 

Approved Document G provides guidance on the supply of water to a property, including water safety, hot water supply, sanitation and water efficiency i.e. an easily accessible water supply that doesn’t incur wastage. 

Guidance given is focused on the supply of sanitary, drinkable water to buildings, including cold drinking water, hot water supplied to bathroom appliances including baths, showers and sinks next to toilets (or in an adjoining room) and to food prep areas in kitchens, and any water needed for the purposes of washing. Hot water systems also require extra safety precautions when they’re unvented.

This edition of Approved Document G (Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency) replaced all previous editions on 1 March 2016.

Changes in this version

This amended edition took effect on 1 March 2016 for use in England. It does not apply to work started before 1 March 2016 or work subject to a building notice, full plans application or initial notice submitted before that date.

These Approved Documents gives guidance for compliance with the Building Regulations for building work carried out in England. It also applies to building work carried out on excepted energy buildings in Wales as defined in the Welsh Ministers (Transfer of Functions) (No. 2) Order 20096.
